In preparation for the Royal RussellÌýConference being held next week, the Lower Sixth MUNÌý(Model United Nations)Ìýteam headed up to London to visitÌýthe PanamanianÌýand .ÌýTheÌýtrip offered students the opportunity to engageÌýinÌýpolitical discussion with representatives of both Panama and Georgia.Ìý

ÌýAfter a short walk from the station,Ìýmembers ofÌýthe team arrived at the impressive grounds of the .ÌýThey wereÌýwarmly welcomedÌýby the Ambassador of Panama, Natalia Royo, and her team:Ìýthe wonderful Luis Eduardo Pabon Chevalier, Karla P.ÌýGonzalezÌýand Michelle Arjona.ÌýÌý

ÌýThe visit offered valuable insight into theÌýcountry, revealing facts about the rainforest covering 75% of the landÌýand theirÌýunique Indigenous culture.ÌýOur studentsÌýwereÌýable toÌýAnalyseÌýthe importance of Panama’s canal,Ìýwhich handles 5% of the world’s trade. TheÌýconversationÌýthatÌýensuedÌýhighlighted the proud mediating role of the PanamaÌýPertainÌýand theÌýpowerÌýstruggleÌýwith theÌýUnited States.ÌýFollowing a short break, theÌýdiscussionÌýcontinued, covering Panama’s forward thinking ban onÌýsingle useÌýplasticÌýand the effortsÌýinitiatedÌýto end illegal trading of goods and people.ÌýÌý

Our teamÌýthenÌýhopped on the tube, bound forÌýthe Georgian Embassy.ÌýOn arrival, ourÌýstudents were greeted by diplomats Ana Nozadze and MargalitaÌýShakarashvili, whoÌýprovidedÌýa wealth ofÌýknowledge on the affairs of Georgia. The compelling conversation mentioned the troubled diplomatic relationship between Georgia and Russia, and how 20% of the Georgian territory is currently occupied by Russia.Ìý

The students felt privileged to be able toÌýimmerseÌýthemselves in the political life of fascinating countries, andÌýwereÌýgrateful forÌýtheÌýhospitality receivedÌýin bothÌýembassies. Kieran Nash, Teacher of Politics
